National Gallery of Art – Study and Print Room Visit – Thursday, June 27, 10 AM

An AWC group visit to the National Gallery of Art’s Study and Print room is scheduled for Thursday, 27 June 2019. This is an exciting experience to see up close original artwork from American watercolor artists, such as Homer, Sargent, and more in the Print Room behind the scenes and main gallery walls. Transportation arrangements will be via NC metro or Annapolis-DC bus from Riva Road. If you want to join this group, please send an email to Kathy Strouss, mkstrouss@verizon.net. A waiting list will be established, should we exceed the reserved group size of 18 people.

Small Group Trip to Glenstone Museum, Montomery County MD – Thursday, June 6, 2019

Ten AWC members were fortunate  to visit to the Glenstone Museum, https://www.glenstone.org/  on Thursday June 6, 2019.  Although entry to this private musem is free, tickets are required and they are hard to obtain. Glenstone, a museum of modern and contemporary art, is integrated into more than 230 acres of gently rolling pasture and unspoiled woodland in Montgomery County, Maryland. Established by the not-for-profit Glenstone Foundation, the museum opened in 2006 and provides a walking and contemplative experience through intimate settings for iconic works of art and architecture within a natural setting. The CBS Sunday Morning show and the Washington Post both featured stories and videos on this exciting venue.

The group. Behind us and below the glass fence is a sculpture entitled “Compression Line” by Michael Heizer.

The approach through wildflower meadows to The Pavilions, the new gallery that opened in October. No photos are allowed inside the gallery.

The group again with a newly-installed sculpture by Charles Ray entitled “Horse and Rider”. The installation was completed the day before we visited!

Another sculpture, by artist Tony Smith, entitled “Smug”.
