Juanita Green, President

Thank you, Shannon Kelly, for the wonderful painting demonstration at our Zoom Meeting on November 8th.

What fun to see our Baltimore Oriole come to life in glorious color.

Connie uploaded the video of Shannon's demonstration to the AWC YouTube channel.  If  you missed the meeting and presentation, you can view it through December 14th at:

IN-PERSON ART SALON

Please remember to bring your seasonal-themed paintings to Seelos Hall when you arrive for the Holiday Party at 12 noon.  There will be time to walk around and look at everyone's paintings and add your comments on the paper provided.

When:    December 5th, 12-4 pm

Where:   Seelos Hall at St. John Neumann Church, 620 N. Bestgate Rd, Annapolis MD 21401, where we had our September meeting. (See below.)

Details:  Join us for the Annapolis Watercolor Club's annual Holiday Party Luncheon.  There will be decorations, a white elephant gift exchange, live piano music, and a holiday themed Art Salon.  There will also be a catered lunch to include: petite sandwiches, charcuterie boards, and crudité platters.

What to Bring:  Your favorite dessert to share, a holiday-themed painting for the Art Salon, a white elephant gift to exchange, and an art gift for a child.

Charity Donation:  Each year the AWC gives to a local charity.  This year we are giving to a charity affiliated with St. Mary's Church in Annapolis: Our Lady of Guadalupe Ministry.  For some years, the ministry has supported the needy local Hispanic population, and immigrants from other countries.

You are encouraged to bring a wrapped art gift to our holiday party for children or young adults.  Or, give a monetary donation on the St. Mary's Church website: https://qrco.de/bebLC8

Holiday Party Gift Exchange

As we get closer to the AWC annual Holiday Party I know everyone is giddy with anticipation for our White Elephant Gift Exchange hosted by our very own Barbara Burns! For those of you who have never attended before, or if you would like a refresher on the rules, they are as follows:

  • 1.     Each player brings one wrapped gift to contribute to a common pool. ($30 suggested maximum spending limit)
  • 2.     Players draw numbers to determine what order they will go in. (1, 2, 3, etc.)
  • 3.     The first player selects a gift from the pool and opens it. Each player will ensure the gift can be seen by all other players.
  • 4.     The following players can choose to either pick an unwrapped gift from the pool or steal a previous player’s gift. Anyone who gets their gift stolen in this way can do the same – choose a new gift or steal from someone else.
  • 5.     Three Swaps and the Gift is Out. If a present gets stolen three times, it’s out of the game and the person who holds it gets to walk away with it.
  • 6.     After all players have had a turn, the first player gets a chance to swap the gift he or she is holding for any other opened gift.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the Holiday Party on December 5th

Don’t forget to bring a dessert to share, and a Holiday-themed painting for the art salon!

EXHIBITS

Our beautiful exhibit at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park was enthusiastically admired by the congregation and all who saw it. We received many compliments and even one sale. Our thanks to Jenny Henry and the Woods Art Committee for installation and all their work creating the poster, brochure and guest book, which was filled with appreciative comments.

Our final exhibit of the year is now beautifully installed at Ginger Cove. I hope you will all take a few minutes to stop by and see it before it closes on January 12. The address is 4000 River Crescent Drive. Someone at the desk will gladly direct you to the gallery. Masks are appreciated, but not required. Our thanks to the Ginger Cove Art Committee for their expertise.

We have no other exhibits scheduled until September 2024 when we will return to Wimsey Cove on Chinquapin Round Road, near West Street in Annapolis. Wimsey Cove provides excellent framing with a wide selection of moldings, as well as giclée reproductions and other art services.

Warmest wishes for happy holidays to all and for a creative new year.

Congratulations Carolyn!

Give the Gift of Little Art!

The holidays can be a time of wonderful joy and sharing, but they can also be a time of loneliness for some. For anyone who is looking to bring a little joy to others, or who would like to receive a bit of holiday cheer I would like to introduce the Free Little Art Gallery.

A Free Little Art Gallery — “FLAG” for short — is like a Little Free Library, but for small artworks instead of books. If you see something in the gallery you like, take it home. Or create something you want to share, and leave it for someone else to take away and love.

There are two locations in the local area for anyone who wishes to participate.

For those of you outside the local area there is a map of all the Free Little Art Galleries located around the world. Find one near you and spread some happiness and cheerhttps://freelittleartgalleries.art/map/

The first is located at the North entrance of Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts,
801 Chase Street, Annapolis MD 21401.

The second is located near the corner of Deer Chase and Shaker Drive in Columbia, MD.

It’s that time of year!  Dues are due by January 1st and are good for the next calendar year.  They are still $35 for 2024.  If you are a current member, you will receive a series of dues reminders, with the first one going out in early December.  If you do not get a reminder, that may be because you have already paid them.  You can check by logging in at annapoliswatercolorclub.org and checking your profile.  To find your profile, click on the avatar in the upper right corner of the page. You will see 'a 'RENEW TO...' button part-way down the profile page. Just above the button, you will see 'Renewal due on' date, so you can check to make sure you have not already paid.  If it says ‘Renewal due on Mon, January 01, 2024’, then you can use the blue button to pay by credit card.  If it says January 01, 2025, then thank you for renewing!

MEMBERSHIP

Where do our members come from?  Since we started presenting our membership meetings on Zoom in 2020, we have been able to invite widely-known demonstrators with no geographical restrictions, and our membership has grown significantly.  We have also gained members from outside the local area.

For several years prior to 2020, membership was averaging around 150 members.  It is now just over 200.  We have members from 11 states including the District of Columbia, and one member from the United Kingdom (admittedly, recently relocated there from Annapolis).  Within Maryland, 12 counties plus Baltimore City are represented.  At the same time, we retain a local identity. A full two-thirds of our membership is from Anne Arundel county, and in fact, one-third have an Annapolis zip code.  We plan to continue presenting most of our meetings on Zoom, with in-person meetings once a quarter.  We plan to record the in-person demonstrations to make them available to those who are unable to attend, and we hope our membership will continue to expand both locally and afar.
