Letter from the AWC Vice President:
Dear Esteemed Members of the Annapolis Watercolor Club,
As the gilded days of summer wane and the cool breath of autumn whispers at our door, I am delighted to extend an invitation for our grand return to the delicate art of watercolor. This season, as we unfurl our brushes and stir our palettes, we are reminded of the enchanting charm and refined sophistication that only watercolor can evoke—a medium both beguiling in its simplicity and challenging in its depth.
In our society, we have those whose brushwork flows with an effortless grace, their colors dancing across the page with a lightness that seems almost magical. They capture the very essence of elegance, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary with just a few strokes. Yet, we also know the struggle of taming this capricious medium. Some of us wrestle with each wash and layer, striving to master its elusive beauty. But let us not forget—the struggle itself is a testament to our dedication and passion. For in the pursuit of artistry, it is the journey, with all its trials and triumphs, that shapes us as artists.
As we gather this fall, let us embrace both the ease and the endeavor of watercolor painting. Whether your brush glides effortlessly or hesitates, know that every stroke is a step closer to capturing the elegance we all seek. Together, we shall create works that reflect not only our skill but also the indomitable spirit that drives us to endure, to improve, and to express.
So, don your finest attire of creativity, my dear members, and join us in this season of artistic renewal. The world of watercolor, with all its allure and challenge, awaits our return.
Yours most sincerely,
Eileen Hempel, AWC Vice President

We hope you will join us, when our guest demonstrator for September will be international award-winning artist, Mick McAndrews. MONTHLY FEATURED ARTIST
Cheryl Duvall is a lifelong artist and delights in the creative process in whatever medium she chooses. She especially enjoys watercolor and studied under Joan Bevelaqua at the Howard County Center for the Arts. In 2017, she and her husband relocated to Annapolis MD where she joined the Annapolis Watercolor Club, participating in exhibitions, attending monthly programs as well as workshops, and serving as President in 2018. In addition to watercolors, Cheryl’s creative outlets include sewing, weaving, and writing. She recently retired from the architecture and interior design industry after 40+ fulfilling years.
|
|
|
Cheryl is a native of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Born in Richmond, raised in Baltimore, educated in College Park, raised a family in Ellicott City, and now living in Annapolis, she has never lived more than a few miles from a Chesapeake Bay tributary. She loves the Bay and is passionate about its health and future. She often paints subjects that celebrate Maryland, such as blue crabs, oysters on the half shell, and water scenes.
When she isn’t painting, weaving, sewing, or writing, she can be found sailing on the Bay with her husband Dudley on their 44’ sailboat, Belle Bateau, or playing with her grandchildren in North Carolina.
Here are two samples of Cheryl's paintings:

EXHIBITS
Can summer really be over already? I hope everyone had a good relaxing time, with creativity and maybe some inspiring travel.
Looking ahead to the fall, our next exhibit will be in mid-November at the Ginger Cove Gallery. Receiving will be on Saturday, November 16, from 9:00 to 10:00 am. Do plan ahead for that. There is no theme so enter whatever paintings you’d like to exhibit, two per artist. Online entry will start in October. There’s room for 30 paintings so entry will cut off when we reach that number. All work needs to be framed, with glass or acrylic, and with wire for hanging. There is no entry fee, no commission and no reception. The art committee even does the installation. All sales are between the buyer and the artist. This is a private residence so there is no reception. However, you are most welcome to bring friends to stop by and enjoy the exhibit at any time. No guarantees, of course, but I’ve found that there are usually sales at this time of year, for holiday giving.
2025 IS OUR GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATION YEAR
Next year, 2025, AWC will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of its founding and plans are underway for several exhibits to celebrate that milestone. These will include:
- “50 Years on the Chesapeake” at the Maritime Museum in Eastport (February 18 to March 16, 2025) . Be thinking about paintings of boats, swimming and other water activities, shorelines, and water scenes.
- A large juried exhibit at Quiet Waters Park with a “golden” theme (August 27 to October 12, 2025).
- We have been invited to once again exhibit at the third annual Earth Day celebration at St. Luke’s Church in Eastport in April.
- At Ginger Cove in the winter.
- And hopefully more!
So, keep watching your monthly newsletter for the latest updates on exhibitions in celebration of this momentous year.
