Letter from the President:

The Annapolis Maritime Museum said our “50 Years On The Chesapeake” exhibit was undoubtedly the most successful exhibit they have had.  Joan Machinchick, our AWC Exhibits Chair, said this show produced the most sales she has seen in her past eight years of AWC exhibits.

Our judge, Moh’d Bilbeisi was completely humbled and caught off guard to find that all his paintings just sold, prior to his arrival to pick them up.  Richard Schatz, our AWC Secretary, sold his largest painting ever and stated he "...really enjoyed being is such good company."

Everyone’s hard work and participation in the “50 Years On the Chesapeake” Exhibit at the Annapolis Maritime Museum really paid off.  Not only did we get a great deal of publicity, but we also sold a total of 16 paintings and gained 11 new members.

The excitement only increases as we prepare to register our paintings for our upcoming “50th Golden Anniversary” exhibit at Quiet Waters Park.  Registration begins on April 1st and remains open until we meet the required 75 paintings (50 paintings from our members and 25 from guest artists).  This exhibit was created to show our creativity and flexibility in using products which might not be familiar to us.  Gold paint or gold embellished paintings is something we have not shown before and our 50th Anniversary is the perfect showcase.  Our creations will commemorate our 50 years being the watercolor club which takes great pleasure in encouraging and inspiring others.

Not only do we paint for the sheer happiness it brings ourselves, but to see the happiness it also brings to others.

Soon we will be seeing gold in a whole new way!

EXHIBITS

Our beautiful “50 Years on the Chesapeake” exhibit at the Annapolis Maritime Museum ended on Sunday, March 16. It was well received and appreciated by all the visitors to the museum. It included 50 paintings depicting Bay scenes, marine and maritime activities, boats, birds, animals, ecology and plenty of water. We had sixteen (16!) sales, probably the most for any AWC exhibit and also the most for any Annapolis Maritime Museum exhibit. We will be invited back next year. There was a festive reception where the winners were announced. Our heartiest congratulations to the winners:

First Place: Annette Uroskie, “Light on Water Study”

Second Place: Stacy Lund Levy, “Taking the Plunge”

Third Place: Rita Grau, “Handsome Heron”

Honorable Mention: Sharon Porter, “Waterman’s Sunrise”

Honorable Mention: Mary Shelby, “A Bushel and a Peck”

Children’s award: Shirley Apple Jenkins, “Wading”

Our special thanks to the Museum staff for their assistance, to our judge, Moh’d Bilbeisi and to Meg Viviano of  Chesapeake Bay Magazine for her lovely review of the exhibit.

EARTH DAY FESTIVAL

Phone: (410) 268-5419

Bring your paintings reflecting any nature-related themes, including but not limited to, landscapes and waterscapes, plants and florals, birds and wild animals, caring for our planet.

The AWC website will be open to receive your entries on April 1, with a deadline of April 15 or a maximum total of 25 framed paintings, which ever comes first. There is a $15.00 entry fee per artist, but no commission. Sales are between the buyer and artist. We’ll have space for two framed paintings per artist, and a maximum of two matted pieces per artist for the bin.

Receiving, on the lower level,  will be on Thursday, April 24, 10:00 to 12:00. Pick up will be on Sunday, April 27, 11:15 to 2:00. Be sure to check in and check out. Please don’t just take your paintings and leave.

Jan Morris is planning some plein air painting opportunities for us in the beautiful grounds and woodlands behind the church so be sure to check her article in this newsletter for details.

If you wish, you are welcome to donate a painting, matted or framed, to the Silent Auction that will be part of the festivities. Also, St. Luke’s Church serves a large number of needy neighbors, presently about 90 families, so donations of non-perishable foods are always welcome.

GOLDEN GALA AT
QUIET WATERS PARK, May 21 to July 6

Our major anniversary celebration of the year will be held at the Quiet Waters Park Visitors Center May 21 to July 6. There will be a catered reception on Sunday, May 25, 1:30 to 3:30 where winners will be announced.

Celebrating our Golden 50th Anniversary, there is a golden theme where every painting is to contain some gold in it. This could be gold color paint or metallic gold paint, gold ink, gold foil or real gold leaf. Be creative as you plan for this exhibit. Have fun with the challenge and create some exciting paintings.

The AWC website will be open to receive entries on April 1, for all AWC members and non-members. It will close on April 21 or when 50 member paintings and/or 25 non-member paintings have been received.

Please spread the word to your non-member watercolor friends about this exhibit opportunity.

When you register, be sure to include a good quality jpeg of each entry. These will be used for publicity and possible other publications and will be viewed by the judge. We will also need the overall frame sizes of your entries.

Paintings over 24” x 30” need to have plexiglas instead of glass. Be sure you have a label on the back of each painting that includes the title, medium, price, your name and contact information (email, phone number, website — and address only if you wish).

If you would like to to leave some business cards, there will be a small table available to display them.

Entry fee is $10.00 per painting (for both members and non-members) with a maximum of two framed and two matted paintings per artist. Commission is 25%. Sales are handled by the Friends of Quiet Waters Park. You will be required to fill out a W-9 form when you sign in, which includes either your SS or an EIN number if you happen to have one. I’ve been assured that these documents are handled with care and privacy and are destroyed at the end of the exhibit.

Receiving, for both members and non-members, will be on Tuesday, May 20, 8:00 to 9:00 am, (yes, it’s early, unfortunately.) and pick up on Sunday, July 6, 2:00 to 4:00. If you are not able to deliver or pick up your paintings at that time, please have a friend do that for you.

This is an all-hung exhibit and a judge will select first, second and third place winners.

The Visitors Center is located at 600 Quiet Water Park Road, within the park, and is open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. When you stop at the gatehouse, tell the volunteer that you are coming to the art exhibit, so you won’t be charged admission to the park — and be sure to mention that to your guests coming to the reception.

This will be our final anniversary year exhibit until the annual Ginger Cove show in November, so be sure to enter your paintings and join in the celebration!

NOTE: Please check the website for updates.

Theresa Jackson

FEATURED ARTIST
OF THE MONTH

Theresa Jackson

My art journey is recent as I had to wait to retire to get started. I wasn't allowed to go to art school!

As a single working mother, I had little time for my desire to paint to come true. I worked at Calvin Klein in New York City and after a divorce and moved back to Maryland where I'm from. I chanced into the unexpected career of designing skating dresses for 25 years!  It was creative but hardly my dream to paint!

I chose watercolor because I loved the combination of science and art. It is hard! And there is so much to understand about the differing properties of the paints.

I began with classes at Maryland Hall and was taught by two people you all know - Sue Corrigan-Yo and Linda Luke! I am ever so thankful for all I learned from these wonderful teachers.  My first subjects were my travel photos from Romania and France.

Then in 2020 Covid hit and Maryland Hall closed. But a new learning opportunity arose -  Zoom!  I would never have been able to learn from so many talented artists without it.  And Annapolis Watercolor Club led the way and showing many artists how to teach on Zoom. I took on-line classes from Thomas Schaller, Alex Hillkurtz, Keiko Tanabe, and Julia Barminova -- among many others. And as they say practice makes perfect (well not exactly perfect). I churned out 185 paintings in 2 years! Every one a new learning experience.

During Covid, I 'exhibited' my budding art skills in my neighborhood along my curved driveway to see if anyone liked them. This outside 'gallery' was complete with facemasks and straws for little wine bottles. I didn't offer anything for sale the first year as it was just a safe way to see neighbors. Now i continue to do this requested event showing local scenes along with my photography and my mosaics. (I also started creating glass mosaic art upon retirement and have been a member of The Arundel Camera Club where I competed well in photography.) In 2021 I had the opportunity to travel to Malta and live with a master mosiac artist and meet other artists working in a variety of mediums. We traveled all over the beautiful islands and discussed color, composition, and famous artists and their work. My main inspiration was the color of the water and I became obsessed with learning to paint it.  Again - practice, practice, practice.

I am honored to be able to show my work through Annapolis Watercolor Club and at other venues.

Below are examples of my paintings.  The one on the right just sold at the Annapolis Maritime Museum AWC exhibit, 'Blackwater Breakwater'.

After four decades of serving the art community, Cheap Joe's Art Stuff has announced it will be closing its doors. The family-owned art supply retailer, with locations in Boone, Charlotte, and Asheville, North Carolina, cited economic challenges within the industry as the primary reason for the closure.

According to their official statement, online orders will cease on April 30, 2025. While the exact closing dates for the physical stores remain undetermined, discounts on select items have already begun as part of their efforts to deplete inventory and support employees during this transition.

Customers holding gift cards are encouraged to redeem them while the stores remain operational. Additionally, the final workshop, "Tulip Time in Watercolor" by Anne Abgott, was scheduled for March 31, 2025.

The closure of Cheap Joe's Art Stuff marks the end of an era for artists who have relied on their quality supplies and workshops. As the art community bids farewell, supporting local, family-owned art suppliers becomes even more crucial to sustain the creative ecosystem.
