Letter from the President:

I cannot believe it is 2025!  I am sure many of us are saying to ourselves, where did the time go.  Was this year chaotic for you?  Did it just seem to wiz by leaving you wondering what you really achieved.  I listened to a woman speaking the other day about living each day more intentionally.  To start her day out intentionally doing things to set her day up for success.  To intentionally get more sleep, eat better, get some form of exercise (even if it is chair exercises), stay in touch with relatives on a more frequent basis -- and maybe even clean out a spot that will be ready for you to paint at any moment.

There is nothing more satisfying than to set up a space with your paint palette, your tubes of paint, some paint brushes, maybe a bulletin board with your ideas for your next painting, maybe some favorite color swatches, and a CD player for some music.  Maybe have a few pictures of loved ones, or pictures you have taken that you would like to paint in your interpretation.

Make a space of your own that is just waiting for you, calling you to come and relax and paint to your heart's content.  The more you sit down and paint, the more you will fall in love with it, because it is truly magical to create something from your heart.  Nobody else can do that but YOU!

Let us keep that artistic fire burning!  Send us an email telling us what you would like to see in the future.  Is there a particular artist you would like us to reach out to?  It there a particular subject matter you would like to see us approach?  Would you like our own painting retreat?  It is a new year and a chance to make your voice heard concerning the AWC events.

We look forward to serving you during our upcoming fabulous 50th Anniversary Year!

Happy New Year!

Juanita Green, President

EXHIBITS

A Happy New Year to all!

Now we close out 2024 and begin preparations for our festive Golden Anniversary celebration year.

Our annual exhibit at Ginger Cove Gallery ended on January 2. Exhibitors  picked up their art work on the 3rd between 9:00 and 10:00.  Always well received, this has been another successful show for the AWC. We appreciate being invited to exhibit in the lovely Ginger Cove Gallery every year and look forward to exhibiting there again at the end of 2025.

IMPORTANT DEADLINE INFORMATION

Now it’s time to plan for our “50 Years on the Chesapeake” exhibit at the Annapolis Maritime Museum. Our esteemed judge, Moh’d Bilbeisi, is  awarding prizes. We have room for 45 paintings having a Chesapeake Bay, marine, maritime or ecology theme. This could be almost anything that has water, boats, ducks or shorebirds, watermen, swimmers and so much more. Entries have been coming in but we still have room for more paintings, two per artist.

Although the exhibit is February 18 to March 16, there is an early deadline of January 11 for entries, so please go to our website and enter your paintings before that date. https://annapoliswatercolorclub.wildapricot.org/sys/website/system-pages/?pageId=18008
Be sure to include a digital image of each of your paintings.  The commission on sales is 30%. There will be a reception on Friday
February 21, from 5:00 to 7:00 so please invite your friends. Parking information will be provided in the February newsletter.

Looking ahead to the rest of 2025, we have several exhibits for you to look forward to.

April 26,
we have been invited to return to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Eastport for a one day Earth Day exhibit. This event brings a lot of visitors to the church grounds for a full day of Earth Day related activities so please plan to join us with your nature-related paintings. More details will be in future issues of the Newsletter.

May 21 to July 6 will be our major exhibit in both galleries at Quiet Waters Park. The theme will reflect our Golden Jubilee celebration so paintings should have a golden color or gold paint or gold leaf and there will be awards.

November 8 to January 2 (2026) - Rounding out the year will be our annual exhibit back at Ginger Cove, No theme. Paintings can be on any subject.

More details about all of these exhibits will be in future issues of the AWC newsletter as the time for entries approaches, but for now start planning ahead (a good New Year’s Resolution) for a gala year in painting!

Workshop Being Planned

Dale Popovich will be presenting a two-day ZOOM workshop for us on February 16 & 17, 2025.  Registration and more information will come out in an email to club members shortly.   Participants will have an opportunity to win (1) of three demo paintings being gifted by artist, Dale Popovich.

Plein Air Sketching and Painting

No plein air event is planned in January due to expected colder than usual weather, and possibly snow storms.  We will meet again on Saturday, February22 at the Robinson Nature Center in Columbia, 10 am - 1 pm. More details in the February newsletter.

On the Morning of December 10th Mildred Anderson Helped Us Create Centerpieces For Our
December 11 AWC Holiday Party

It was a foggy, damp morning...

But, Mildred had warm raisin scones, hot tea and coffee waiting for us.

There were greens of many varieties -- and we all brought decorations to add.

L-R Mildred Anderson, Wendy Braithwaite, Juanita Green

Connie Robinson received a centerpiece made by Mildred.

Each of the 10 centerpieces were special!  A fun time was had by all:

L-R Nancy Levin, Mary Kay Honeycutt, Joan Machinchick

Holiday Party Was So Much Fun
On December 11 in Seelos Hall

Thank you Angela Nassar with A&A Catering for providing food for our AWC Holiday Party.  Your helpers, Donna and Jonathan, created festive tables, and food selections.  And, Jonathan even helped us take many items to our cars in the rain after our event!

If you would like Angela Nassar to cater your next event, contact her at  https://www.aandaannapolis.com/about

Barbara Burns hosted our annual Gift Exchange Game.  Members provided wrapped art-related gifts to pick from -- and maybe "steal" from one another.  Everyone went home with a nice gift.  And, each table had one lucky member who went home with a table centerpiece floral arrangement.

Many members brought their paintings to display.

Sharon Kopstein and
Cheryl Duval catching up.

Richard Schatz provided
lovely holiday music!

Linda Luke, Juanita Green, and Connie Robinson
having a good time!

Thank you AWC members for donating art gifts to needy Hispanic children for

Isn't this necklace beautiful?  Hand made by Liz Grimes.

"My painting Aquatic Ascent was accepted into this year’s National Watercolor Society and won the Associates Cash Award. I am delighted to have also been juried in as a signature member of the NWS!"

Nancy Levin and Mindy

Nancy has been accepted in many juried shows, including the Naval Academy exhibits.  She is an active member of the Annapolis Watercolor Club,
the West River Artists, and Arts Aweigh.

FEATURED ARTIST
OF THE MONTH

Nancy studied at the Kansas City Art Institute.  Her work has been headlined in various stores in several states.  Her media included stained and fused glass, jewelry, florals, pottery, hand-formed clay, and painting in oil, acrylic and watercolor.  She has applied her painting talent to murals using techniques such as, decorative, faux, and trompe l'oeil..  Nancy has also taught many workshops in these subjects to professionals and the general public. She feels like her paint brush is dancing across the canvas and this gives her freedom to infuse her work with depth, dimension, movement, and emotions like joy, love, and innocence.  With watercolor paints, she feels like there is a flow of freshness, where she can easily take away and add pigments.
(below are two examples of her art work)

WEB SITE AND MEMBERSHIP NEWS

Happy New Year! Thank you to all of you who have already renewed your membership for 2025.  Our membership year begins on January 1st, so if you have not done so yet, you will receive a third reminder on that day.  If you mailed a check, you may still get a reminder if your payment hasn’t been credited yet, since these payments need to be processed by hand.

To renew, go to https://annapoliswatercolorclub.org/Sys/Profile and log in, using your email address as your user name and selecting ‘Forgot password’ if you don’t remember your password or have not logged in before. If payment has not been received by January 21, your membership status will be changed to "lapsed," you will stop receiving AWC emails and newsletters, and you will need to renew your dues before registering for any members-only events.

We closed the year with 218 members, almost the same as last year.  Nearly forty of these were new members, and we retained over 80% of our members from last year.  Every year we have some turn-over in membership, so we are always looking for new members.  Our best advertising is word-of-mouth, so spread the word and encourage you friends to join!  At $35 per year, with ten meetings per year and artist demonstrations at almost every meeting, as well as opportunities for workshops, exhibitions, and plein air events, it has always been a great deal.  And of course, if you have not already renewed your membership, please go to the website and do so now, so you don’t miss out on another great year with AWC!
