Letter from the Vice President:

October is here, and with it comes a special treat for our club! We’re excited to host “Halloween Tricks and Watercolor Treats” on October 8th — an afternoon full of fun, creativity, and surprises. There will be over $1,500 in art supplies available for members to try, plus goody bags for the first 50 people through the doors, and a few extra giveaways you’ll have to attend to discover.

Just like the brilliant reds, oranges, and golds that light up the season, this event is a chance to immerse yourself in the rich colors of fall. Think of the fiery maples, glowing pumpkins, and crisp autumn skies — all waiting to be captured in paint.  It is the perfect opportunity to experiment with warm palettes, layer textures, and explore techniques that bring out the depth and vibrancy of the season. Most of all, it is a chance to celebrate together, connect, and share inspiration drawn from the beauty all around us.

I would also like to give a warm thank-you to Joan Cranor for hosting her wonderful workshop on September 10 at our Zoom Members' Meeting. We are grateful for the time, creativity, and insight she shared with our members.

Wishing you all a colorful and inspiring October!

Warmly,

Eileen Hempel, Vice President
Annapolis Watercolor Club

Thank you, Emma Lian
for your painting demonstration on Sept 10

We all enjoyed seeing examples of  Emma's paintings in her studio preceding her painting demonstration at our Zoom meeting.  No wonder she has her work published in many magazines!  Below is the completed cornflower painting she worked on during her demonstration.

Workshop Was A Huge Success!
Thank you Joan Cranor for your wonderful workshop on Sept 18th & 19th

Everyone enjoyed your enthusiasm and knowledge that you shared with us!  Here is one of the paintings she painted with us.

Oct 15, Adkins Arboretum
Fall Painting/Sketching

Adkins Arboretum has over 400 acres of native plants and forest representing the Mid Atlantic coastal plain. We may get lucky and hit peak fall foliage. Once you arrive at the Visitor Center, pick up a trail map. Review and seek out the different displays of wetlands, meadows and forests to explore for your painting. Most are within 1/2 to 1 mile of the visitor center. Hope to see you there!  See images of the arboretum:

Place:12610 Eveland Road Ridgely MD (approximately 30 minutes from the Bay Bridge)

Date: Wednesday, October 15, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Rain will cancel the event.

Fee: Free. Donations are appreciated.

Parking/Meeting Point: Follow parking signs then walk to Visitor Center. Bringing supplies in from the car can be a burden so a wagon/rolling cart would be useful. A volunteer-driven golf cart may be reserved no later than October 3 to assist those who have issues walking. Contact Carol Kramer, 703 725-6133 to make reservations.

NOTE: The visitor center has bathroom facilities, access to water, and a gift shop. They also provide audio tours for you to borrow and learn more about the area.

Helen Tawes Garden Post Event Review by Jan Morris  (held September 18)

This cozy spot followed up nicely to the September demonstration on painting Black-Eyed Susan flowers. There were loads of the state flower in bloom along with nature-inspired statues, large trees and shady ponds. Painters chose the flying duck statue, moss covered trees, flowers and larger areas with the artist’s dog Olive to capture on paper. The day was partly sunny casting beautiful shadows throughout the space. Thanks to the fabulous five who attended and shared their work.

Feel free to share your comments with the pleinairchair@annapoliswatercolorclub.org

Featured Artist
Angela DiCicco

Based in Annapolis, MD, Angela DiCicco has a passion for abstract and nautical artworks. Angela came to painting in her 50’s and has been processing her life on canvas since 2011, first in oils and pastels, now in acrylics and mixed media. Her work became deeper and more complex after her husband’s motorcycle accident in 2015 that left him a paraplegic.

Through her abstract art and authoring a book, Angela processed the myriads of emotions she had after her husband’s accident. Pouring her feelings on canvas, Angela found others could relate to the angst and passion she expressed. Art became her sanity in the daily maelstrom of chaos that she found herself in.
