Letter From AWC President

We had a couple days of warm weather and I started counting the days till March 20th.  That’s right, the first day of Spring!  It can’t come soon enough for me.

I am having visions of St. Patrick’s Day and Easter.  I cannot help thinking of all the opportunities ahead of us this year.  There are so many things I would like to do; including meeting many of you!

I am hoping to see you at the upcoming “Brush with Springtime Exhibit” and look forward to meeting Mick McAndrews, our judge.  It will be so nice to get out and socialize and see all of your wonderful paintings.

I hope that you have been painting this winter.  While the snow was falling and the fireplace was crackling, I noticed all my unfinished paintings starring at me.  When I started seeing how many there really were, I decided it was time to take up my paintbrush again.  Since David Lawton will be coming to us for the April Spring Fling during our AWC meeting on April 13, I think I will try to finish a painting or two and submit them for critique.  I have never done that before, and I would challenge you to give it a try with me.  We have so much we can learn from a critique.

It has been so much fun watching our demonstrators on Members Meeting night.  I hope that you are learning something from each demonstration and putting those ideas, tips, or tricks to use.  If you have an artist who you would like to see do a demonstration and/or workshop for us, please let me know.  Just email me and we will do our best.

Find something good in each day and hold onto it tightly,

Juanita Green

William Rogers
Our next painting demonstrator for the AWC Members Meeting, March 9

William (Bill) Rogers is an Elected Member of The Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour (CSPWC) of which he is currently the Past President.  He is also a signature member of the American Watercolor Society (AWS), the Transparent Watercolor Society of America (TWSA), and the Societe Canadienne de l’Aquarelle (SCA), and recently the ASMA  American Society of Marine Artists.

Horses are a subject dear to his heart, as he had owned them for over 20 years, until 1993, when his art career demanded his total attention.  One of his horse paintings, "Go" has been published in "Splash 14" from Northlight Books.  Come enjoy Bill's demonstration on March 9.

Visit William Roger's web site:

Thank You, Dale Popovich

We had over 133 members attend our AWC meeting and Dale Popovich's painting demonstration on Feb 9.  Dale was professional and friendly with his hints and techniques for completing his landscape painting.  Toward the end, his neighborhood lost power, so we had to sign off and then post the complete demonstration on our AWC YouTube channel.  See both videos at:  https://youtu.be/4rBuASwCvKw
and https://youtu.be/BYkEqd6ZJ5Y
They will be posted until March 10.

Some of Dale's hints:
- Do not work on details in the beginning
- Always used "good" paint, brushes and paper
- He uses Rosemary #12, 8, 4 and 1" flat (usually just 4 brushes)- He uses indigo paper, highly textured, 22x30, 1/4 sheet
- Keep your edges soft as long as you can
- Save all paintings. You can always go back and learn from them

AWC WEBSITE

Did you know:  you can contact any of the board members with a question or suggestion directly through the website?  We strive to protect personal information, especially email addresses and phone numbers, since we are all bombarded with spam and solicitations.  As a result, the names and contact information of board members does not appear in the public area of the website.   However, if you are logged in as a member, you can go to the drop-down menu under ‘Members’ and select ‘Board Members’ to find a list of our current board.  Just click on their name to bring up a contact form, and your message will be sent directly to their email address.

Speaking of spam, remember to be wary of phishing emails.  Be wary of strange, urgent requests; look for telltale misspellings.  If you receive an email asking for gift cards or money, for example, that appears to be from someone you know, do not reply to the email.  When in doubt, check the full email header. The ‘From’ address may be ‘spoofed’, meaning the name that shows up in the email header has been fabricated and is not actually associated with the email address.  Instead of hitting "reply," look up their email address and send them a new email asking if the request actually came from them.

EXHIBITS

The entries for our beautiful exhibit at Quiet Waters Park have all been received and plans are underway for receiving on March 29 and the reception on April 3, 1:30 to 3:30. I hope you will all plan to attend and be sure to invite your family, friends and patrons. There is a flyer on our AWC website that you can forward to them, giving details about dates and hours.  Click on this link to download the .pdf for printing, or to include in emails:  https://annapoliswatercolorclub.org/resources/Pictures/AWC@QWP%20poster%20copy.pdf

To all of you who have entered this exhibit, kindly pay careful attention to the dates and times of both receiving and pick up. And please be sure to fill out and sign a copy of the Honors and Waiver statement and bring it with you.  A special thank you to all of you who have volunteered your assistance. I will be in touch with you to work out details.

Our judge for the awards is Mick McAndrews, who is familiar to many of you. Mick teaches watercolor workshops across the U.S, has received many awards for his paintings and is a member of several watercolor societies. “(His) award winning paintings strive to capture the mood and atmosphere of a subject, combining the magic of watercolor with reverence for the principles of design to create works of sophisticated simplicity.” There is much more about him on his website, https://www.mickmcandrewsfineart.com along with many images of his paintings. [“Morning on the Chesapeake” by Mick McAndrews - shown below]

We are most grateful to the Friends of the Arts (FOTA) for their generous donation of the prizes  for this exhibit, which they will present at the reception. FOTA is a non-profit organization that provides support to arts organizations and individuals to further their art-related goals and nurture an appreciation of the arts among its members. They have supported the arts through scholarships to college art majors from Anne Arundel County and through direct donations to arts organizations.

AWC members, Carol Conrad and Connie Robinson, were among local artists who submitted their paintings.  They will be exhibited in the theater lobby during the show, which ends March 6.  There is still time to order tickets for the last weekend.  https://thecolonialplayers.org/

MONTHLY
FEATURED ARTIST

   By Newsletter Editor, Connie Robinson

We currently have over 177 members in our club, and not everyone knows each other.  Because we have been Zooming during our monthly meetings, we can see faces and names on our computer screens; but, have not been able to converse with each other.  Hopefully, we will some day meet in person again in Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts.  There are members from out of state that still need an introduction.

For future articles, please send me an email with a nomination for another artist:  constancejr@comcast.net

After a 40-year career in elementary education…hooray…I had time to finally follow several passions: traveling with family and friends through many countries in the world; reading a good book for whole days; and, very importantly, having time to take a class or two from admired watercolor artists.  For years I had been painting with little time to study the basic techniques: color theory, or composition.   One day I attended a AWC exhibition at the Linthicum farmhouse in Crofton, Maryland.  Having just stopped in to enjoy the paintings, the then President of AWC asked me if I painted.  I hemmed and hawed and said, “Maybe”.  She said, “You have got to join!  Sign here!”

At my first meeting I was mesmerized by the first painting demonstration I had ever seen.  And, when we used to meet in person, I was always in the front row every month after that!

In Asheville, North Carolina, where I live for six months of the year, a senior extension of UNCA offered the classes I could get started in and, with little confidence, be encouraged by peers to, “keep at it!”  I did, and painting has brought me so many happy hours.

Now it is 14 years later and I teach other inspired seniors to paint and do pen and ink sketching at the UNCA.  What a joy to be able to give back and say to others, “Keep at it”!

The arts offer us so many fulfilling activities.  When we are creating we are expressing what brings us the most joy in our individual worlds.  My paintings are usually natural settings with objects that surround me or outdoor subjects like birds or fall leaves.  I enjoy seeing all the works presented at the Art Salon prior to our meetings….Thanks to all of our members for sharing their many talents!  Gratitude fills our lives.

Dale Popovich Door Prize

At our February AWC meeting we enjoyed a beautiful presentation from Dale Popovich highlighting his distinctive method of landscape painting.  As part of his presentation Dale offered two door prizes of which I was one of the lucky winners.   I was very fortunate to see his online course "Learn the Magic of Watercolor" where he once again highlighted his very distinctive method of doing trees and woodland scenes.  It was lovely to be able to watch the techniques and be able to pause the film and try out the technique myself.  Here is my attempt at the project which still needs a bit of work, but so far has turned out quite well. My best takeaway was "watch the paint dry" while working on the piece.  By waiting between layers while the painting dried instead of using a hair dryer, I was able to slow down and evaluate where I was going during the painting.  Thank you Annapolis Watercolor Club and Mr. Popovich for this very informative  opportunity.   Mr. Popovich is offering a workshop with our club and offers several online courses which I would not hesitate to recommend at Towering Winds Academy.
