Letter from the President:

Do you ever feel like you are in your own sitcom?  This morning felt like “As the World Turns."  Although a nice relaxed day would be preferred, surely there will be some sort of drama before the day ends.  But for now, settling down for a warm cup of tea and a croissant with a cold pat of butter, sounds very inviting.  Afterwards, will be the consultation with the plumber who is completing the final plumbing hook ups in the new addition.  Once everything is on track, the to-do list for today needs to be checked off, one action item at a time.   If all goes well, there will be a sense of completion, satisfaction and time at the end of the day for some watercolor painting.  In the still of the night comes the most productive time for painting.   There are no interruptions, no loud noises, children and puppies are sleeping, and the mind is able to wander through the events of this week, this month, or this year.  Reviewing old photos and sketches for painting inspiration will always lift your spirits.  But putting your ideas on watercolor paper is somehow magical and transformational!

Shenandoah National Park and the Skyline Drive were particularly beautiful this year.  The weather being unusually warm with few storms allowed the leaves to stay on the trees longer.   The colors were rich and vibrant with all the shades of orange, red, yellow, and purple that could be imagined.  Inspiration for a painting was around every corner.

Our AWC 50th Year Anniversary is fast approaching and it is going to be a year to be remembered.  We decided to celebrate all year just because we can.  There will be watercolor exhibits for you to show off your paintings, a very special art-related excursion/trip, many headliner artists for our demonstrations – both on Zoom and in person; our April Spring fling where you can have your paintings critiqued; a hands-on meeting where you can try new watercolor products, sketching and plein air events, and a chance to interact with the community.  We are open to new ideas and will do everything in our power to help increase your watercolor skills.  We want to see you try new techniques, share what you have learned in one of our monthly salons, enter a painting in an exhibit, or just paint for your own enjoyment.  Maybe share what you have learned with your children, grandchildren or a neighbor.  Watercolor painting has a way of bringing out the best in us, if we just give it a chance.  So next year will be about being our very best watercolor selves and belonging to a watercolor club that enriches our lives.

Your Paint Brush Is Calling You…………will you respond?

See you soon,
Juanita Green, President

Guest Painting Demonstrator - Dale Popovich

Our November 13 Zoom Members Meeting will include a demonstration by one of our favorite artists, Dale Popovich.  You will have an opportunity to paint along with him, or enjoy the presentation, watch the video, and paint at a later date.  A photo reference, a sketch of the painting, a value study and a materials list will be provided in an email to our members prior to the meeting.  This is an opportunity for you to paint a fall landscape with beautiful autumnal colors for yourself or maybe to gift.  Enjoy the relaxed and humorous teaching of Dale Popovich.  Learn ways to create texture in your paintings with unexpected items.  Dale is full of tips!  Visit his web site: http://www.dalepopovich.com/the-artist.html

THANK YOU,  EILEEN HEMPEL

Our October 9th Members Meeting called “Halloween Tricks and Watercolor Treats”
was a real scream!  Our Vice President, Eileen, was quite engaging while sharing information about gold watercolor paint products, which will be used in our golden anniversary paintings.  The information shared will be posted on our website for easy access and printing when needed.

Our afternoon included goody bags, with art products, for the first 45 members to arrive.  There was a demonstration and then we had time to try out new watercolor products arranged on seven individual tables.   Where do you get an opportunity to try out products to see how they work?  Here at AWC, of course!  Hopefully, you found a new product to add to your tool box and an upcoming painting.  Before the meeting ended, fifteen (15) bags of watercolor products were raffled off to our members.  Your chances of receiving a gift bag were pretty good.  What a fun afternoon to learn and have a hands-on experience with new products.  People are still commenting on what an enjoyable afternoon this was, and, therefore, we will be repeating this experience next year.

GINGER COVE ANNUAL EXHIBIT
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2024 TO FRIDAY, JANUARY 3, 2025

We still have room for your entries in our annual exhibit at Ginger Cove! We are extending the deadline to November 5, so there’s still time to enter.

This is such an easy exhibit with no entry fee, no commission, no reception, any subject matter, any size watercolor., completed at any time.  Sales are between the buyer and the artist.

Just go to the AWC website  https://annapoliswatercolorclub.org/event-5885455, enter the titles and prices of your two paintings, along with your name, email and phone number, then drop off your paintings on Saturday, November 16, between 9:00 and 10:00 and pick up on Friday, January 3 between 9:00 and 10:00. The Ginger Cove Art Committee does all the rest!

“50 Years on the Chesapeake”

Annapolis Maritime Museum, February 18 to March 16, 2025

723 Second Street, Annapolis

2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of Annapolis Watercolor Club and we have several exhibits planned in celebration of this banner year.

Starting off will be our long anticipated exhibit at the Annapolis Maritime Museum. This exhibit will be judged by the esteemed artist and workshop instructor, whom many of you already know and admire, Moh’d Bilbeisi. Prizes will be awarded.

You’ll want to share in this celebration and enter your paintings that have a local ecology, marine or maritime* theme, including, but not limited to: The Bay and its tributaries in any weather such as wind, fog, snow, ice, sunrise or sunset; shore lines; marshes; buildings along the shore; boats historic and modern, large and small, sail and power; working the Bay, fishing, crabbing, hunting; fish, crabs, waterfowl; sea nettles and other Bay inhabitants; retrievers, especially if they're depicted doing water related activities! Basically, anything relating to this Chesapeake Bay that we all cherish. One other suggestion from the Maritime Museum is to possibly include some famous buildings in Annapolis, such as the Naval Academy dome. Paintings that don’t correspond to the theme might possibly be rejected.

The website will be open on November 5 to receive your entries.
Register here:

   https://annapoliswatercolorclub.org/event-5926804.

Please include the title and price of each of your two entries plus a .jpg of the image, and your name, email address and phone number. There is a $10.00 entry fee per painting. All paintings must be for sale. The Museum takes a 30% commission on sales.

Please be sure to read the disclaimers and waivers on the website before signing. This is slightly different from our usual, especially the paragraph about photographs taken at public events held at the Museum, and possibly posted on social media.

Deadline for entries will be January 11, 2025

Delivery date will be February 17, with pick up on March 17

There will be a gala catered reception on February 21, 5:00 to 7:00
(parking information will follow)

There are even more exhibits planned and confirmed for our celebratory year, including Earth Day at St. Luke’s Church in April, a special show at Woods Church in Severna Park in October/November and our annual Ginger Cove exhibit . Stay tuned for details and keep painting as there’ll be plenty of opportunities to showcase your inspiring art in 2025!

Marine Ecology is the scientific study of marine-life habitats, populations, and interactions among organisms and the surrounding environment including their abiotic (non-living physical and chemical factors that affect the ability of organisms to survive and reproduce) and biotic factors (living things or the materials that directly or indirectly affect an organism in its environment). Wikipedia

Marine Life is everything that lives in the water: plants, fish, sharks, algae, crabs, seahorses, giant squid, and the list goes on and on. Merriam-Webster

FEATURED ARTIST
OF THE MONTH

Growing up in a single family home with limited income, I quickly learned that the one thing we
could
afford was a pencil and a sketch pad. I spent hours drawing and loved nothing more than spending time in the art store (remember them?) picking out a fresh sketch pad and new pencil.

I received my degree in education from the University of Maryland but, sadly, did not pursue art. At the time I graduated, Maryland schools were pushing for the three r’s: reading, writing, and  arithmetic.  To my horror, art teachers were being dropped in the public school system.  So, in my pursuit to have a steady job, I did not take art in university. I did  paint, however, and chose watercolors as my preferred medium because at the time, they were less expensive.

Now that I am retired, I enjoy taking workshops and learning all I can from talented artists. I formerly served as co-president of the Prince George’s Art Association, prior to moving to New Zealand. I have exhibited in the area. Outside of watercolor, I have also started dabbling in pastels, which I LOVE! That, along with knitting and seven grandchildren keep me busy and very happy!

WEB SITE AND MEMBERSHIP NEWS

Our club now numbers over 200 members, and that is excellent news. We have a full calendar of demonstrations, exhibits, workshops, and plein air events. But, if you check our Board Member pages, you will count about a dozen names, and just about everything that happens is through the work of these individuals. You will notice a number of vacant positions, including Treasurer, Exhibits Chair, Workshop Chair, and Hospitality Chair.

Have you considered taking a more active role? The pay is non-existent, but the rewards are great! Talk to any AWC board member, and you will hear that we are rewarded by the connections and sense of teamwork from working with other board members, as well as the satisfaction of what we do. If you are interested in volunteering in any way, please contact President Juanita Green or any other board member. .heir contact information is listed in this newsletter and on the website.

SUNSHINE CLUB

We are still here. Still waiting for a good excuse to send out some beautiful Jacquie Lawson e-cards to Annapolis Watercolor Club members for painting milestones and recognitions, or to boost morale for those in a bit of a slump. I'm sure they would be very THANKFUL if you send their name, email and occasion to  sunshine.AWC.dw@gmail.com  to get the ball rolling.

Thank You, Dina Weavers
