Letter from the President:

How do you go back to your everyday life – after spending 45 days in an RV, traveling the most remote areas of Alaska and Canada?  After driving over 11,500 miles and waking up to adventures every day:  going to Denali National Park in Alaska and seeing all the animals you have had on your wish list for so long; watching grizzly bears catching fish in the river; watching caribou scratching the velvet off their antlers, and seeing jade boulders the size of your car!  Although it was long, it was a once-in-a -lifetime trip that also allowed me to celebrate my grand-daughter’s 11th birthday!

My extended trip would not have been possible if our AWC Vice President, Eileen Hempel, had not “stepped up to the plate” in my absence.  For that I am most grateful!  Eileen took care of our board meeting, our Members’ Meeting in September, and even planned our October Members’ Meeting.  I realize she has set the bar high for me!

I guess I have to stop thinking about the Alcan Highway, Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise, Yellowstone National Park, the Badlands, the porcupine, the ice fields (glaciers) and no telephone reception.  Our escapades were wonderful, because we were doing what we love.  Traveling!  There is something about waking up each morning, not knowing what you are going to see around the next bend.  It was breathtaking just getting away from everything, turning everything off, and just tuning into nature.

I am happy to be back to see what Eileen has in store for us, for our October Members’ Meeting.  I understand there will be “Halloween Tricks and Watercolor Treats” for us to enjoy.  Be sure to bring a watercolor brush and pad to try out some new watercolor products.  You might also like to bring one (1) gently used watercolor book to trade in for a book you don’t have.  We always encourage you to bring a current watercolor painting you are working on, or have completed, for our Art Salon display – and a snack for all to enjoy.

Come relax, meet some new members and enjoy our favorite subject – watercolor painting!  Can’t wait to see you on Wednesday, October 9th at Seelos Hall!

Keep Painting Because It Makes You Happy,
Juanita Green, President

ART SALON
In Person

Bring your art work in process, or framed work, to our in-person Members' Meeting at Seelos Hall.  There are plenty of table easels available to set up your art.  We will also have paper and pens available for members to leave "encouraging remarks," which you can take with you after the exhibit.  We want to see what you have been up to!
  - Connie Robinson

When: At our October 9th in-person meeting at Seelo’s Hall from 1-4 pm

The agenda for the meeting is as follows:

1. A Watercolor Book Swap: A table will be set up for people to bring a watercolor book and leave a watercolor book. A chance to get an old watercolor book off the shelf and allow someone else to try it, while finding something new without having to pay for a new book.

2. Goody-bags: will be handed out to the first 45 members through the door. The goody-bags contain items that will assist each artist in celebrating our "Golden Anniversary."

3. Presentation: The afternoon will start with presentations by our Vice President on ways to add gold to watercolor paintings and a watercolor gift guide.

4. Art Supply Tryouts: Following the introduction of items from the presentations, everyone will be invited to try multiple watercolor and art items stocked at each of the tables. This will be a chance for artists to try the newest, latest, and sometimes oldest watercolor/art methods.

5. We have one more "trick" up our sleeves, but it's a surprise. You'll have to be there to find out.

What should artists bring? A watercolor brush, a small watercolor pad or watercolor sketchbook, and a gently used watercolor book for the book swap.

THANK YOU MICK MCANDREWS FOR YOUR
ENJOYABLE PAINTING DEMO ON SEPTEMBER 11

We cannot thank Mick McAndrews enough for his captivating painting demonstration on Sept 11 during our Zoom Members' Meeting.  Our members should have already received an invite to watch the recorded video on YouTube.

Mick's techniques are unique, as well as some of his interesting quotes:
"When in doubt, leave it out!"
"Do-dads are used to suggest stuff."
When spraying water on an area to fade the details out, he stated: "You are not that important."

What Are Our AWC Members Up To?

Some of our AWC Members also belong
to the Baltimore Watercolor Society

Thanks to BWS Hospitality Chair Lisa Kokes (pictured here with BWS President, Linda Luke) for a splendid Member Luncheon/Plein Air event Sept 24, including an insider introduction to the picturesque village of Washington Grove.

Here we are digging into a delicious feast from Cava Mezze.

BWS Membership Chair Janice Hendra was one of many who had some plein air fun as the rain held off (we were also offered spots on residents' porches). The area's many charming cottages, set in peaceful woodlands, date from its early resort days, not long after the village's founding as a religious revival camp in the 1870s.

Andrea Naft had three paintings shown at the Mount Vernon Place Art Show in Baltimore City on September 22.

Congratulations, Andrea!

AWC and BWS Watermedia Master Stacy Lund Levy got seriously goofy with this multi-portrait of her son, "Three Sides of Max" and won the W. Emerson Heitland Memorial Award at the Philadelphia Watercolor Society 124th International Exhibition.

Congratulations, Stacy!

Linda Luke will be hosting a

EXHIBITS

GINGER COVE ANNUAL EXHIBIT
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2024 TO FRIDAY, JANUARY 3, 2025

I hope you have all been enjoying some creative painting time over the summer and have some new paintings to share with the public. It is time to start planning for our annual exhibit at Ginger Cove. This show is open to all AWC members. The only requirement is that they must be framed original watercolor paintings. Our subject matter can be anything you desire, as long as the work hasn’t been previously exhibited at Ginger Cove.

There is no reception, as Ginger Cove is a private retirement residence. However, you are more than welcome to bring guests to drop in and visit the gallery at any time. Just stop at the welcome desk near the front door and someone will direct you to the gallery.  The address is 4000 River Crescent Drive, Annapolis 21401.

Delivery will be on Saturday, November 16 at 9:00 am. Pick up must occur on Friday, January 3, between 9:00 and 10:00 am.

Sales are conducted between the buyer and the artist. There is no commission on sales so you might want to take this into consideration when pricing your work. Two entries per artist. Please attach a label to the back of each piece with the title of the painting, medium, price, and your name and contact information.  There is no entry fee for participating in this exhibit.

Please go to the AWC website and register before Saturday, October 26. Kindly include the title of your painting, price, and your contact information, especially phone number and email.   https://annapoliswatercolorclub.org/

Ruth Robinson-Sater (age 33)
1922-1991

FEATURED ARTIST
OF THE MONTH
By Connie Robinson

In honor of my mother-in-law, Ruth Robinson-Sater, whose birthday was October 2nd, I am featuring this accomplished painter!

Born in Baltimore on October 2, 1922, third girl to father, John Leineman, a Hutzler Brothers Dept. Store floor manager, and mother, Laura Pritchett, Seamstress, the former Ruth Alexeana Leineman, studied at the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, and at the Fashion Academy in New York City.

During World War II, she painted illustrations for the Glenn L. Martin Company, in Baltimore, Maryland, now Martin Marietta Corp.

Her art training and working experience enabled her to illustrate fashions and clothing in the 1970s for many department stores in Baltimore, Maryland, which appeared in newspapers and magazines.

Since Ruth was educated as a commercial artist she drew fashion and house ware advertisements for the News American and May Company in Baltimore, Hess Shoes and other stores in Washington D.C., Boston, Massachusetts, and Jacksonville, Florida.

An avid photographer and painter, her works included scenes of the boats of the Chesapeake Bay and the New England Coast, the Catskill, New York mountains, Florida Keys, rural areas in Pennsylvania, and covered bridges in Maryland and Massachusetts.  She painted landscapes and seascapes in oils and watercolors in the many areas where she lived.  As a resident of the Eastern Shore of Maryland on Tilghman Island she became a member of the Academy of the Arts in Easton..

Toward the end of her life, her painting concentration was on scenes of the ballet and images of Jesus Christ.  At the early age of 68, with many years of creating art ahead of her, Ruth Robinson-Sater died of Leukemia on July 13, 1991 with her devoted husband, John, by her side.

(Shown below are two watercolor paintings that Ruth painted while living in the  Florida Keys in the early 1970s.  They are both hanging in our home.)
