President's Letter

Excitement is building over our upcoming events!

Kathleen Lanzoni’s two-day workshop is filling up quickly.   This is the first time we have done an evening workshop and are pleased with your response.  The last time she was with us, her workshop sold out and the paintings that everybody completed were beautiful.  We believe you will be delighted with her teaching style and the confidence she will instill in you!  Take a moment and go look at her watercolor paintings on her website at:   https://kathleenlanzoni.com/

One of the many benefits of membership with the Annapolis Watercolor Club, is a recorded watercolor demonstration made available for one month after the artist has done a demonstration for us.

Last month Kathleen Lanzoni was our artist/demonstrator at our Members Meeting.  We recorded her presentation and then placed it on You-Tube for our members.  This is beneficial if you missed the meeting or would like to go back and review what she taught.  There is always something you can learn from each demonstration.  It couldn’t get any better than having a recording you can stop while you get another glass of tea, or pause while you re-fill your paint palette or get clean water for your painting.  Then just click at will and continue watching at your leisure.

Just a reminder that Stacy Lund Levy is returning for our March 13 Members’ Meeting.  You might remember her demonstration was cancelled in January due to an internet outage in the Annapolis area.  Our meeting will be on Zoom and we will record her demonstration to place on YouTube afterwards.  Stacy will be using a limited palette as she creates her animal portrait for us.  Pay special attention to how she creates realistic fur and features on her animals.  It could seriously help you paint a picture of your pet, your families or a friends.

The month of March is the perfect time to be thinking about our 2nd Annual Earth Day Exhibit.  It is held at the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Eastport April 26 – 28, Friday through Sunday.   What a great time to let Nature be you inspiration and show off your artwork during the exhibit.  You can find more information about this event in our Newsletter.  Just keep reading!

We hope that you were able to reserve your seat on the bus, to go see the 157th Annual American Watercolor Society’s Exhibit.  The Salmagundi Club has allowed us a private viewing of all the paintings, in the morning, before the public is allowed entry.   There are two floors of paintings that will inspire, motivate and linger in your mind for who knows how long.   If you would like to be on a waiting list, in case of cancellation, please click on the link below and go to the American Watercolor Society’s event –click the blue button that says “join waitlist” and follow the instructions.     https://annapoliswatercolorclub.org/events

PAINTING
DEMONSTRATION
 AT MEMBERS' MEETING
BY

STACY LUND-LEVY

Artist and Baltimore native, Stacy Lund Levy has been creating art in many forms since kindergarten. She earned an undergraduate degree from Hood College in Biochemistry as well as a Masters Degree at The Johns Hopkins Art as Applied to Medicine program.

Combining her natural artistic talents with her intellectual interest in anatomy and science, she initially worked as a medical illustrator.

Stacy then opted to establish Lund Art Studios, a career move that enabled her to take on a variety of clients both locally and nationally, and also to jury shows, teach classes and workshops, give demonstrations, and exhibit her artwork.

Lynn Speedie

MONTHLY FEATURED ARTIST
Lynn Speedie

Dr. Lynn Speedie earned her Ph.D in 1971 in Counseling Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. She served on the faculties of Tulane  University, University of Florida, Johns Hopkins Medical School and Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

In 1995, Dr Speedie accepted the challenge of building a Neuropsychology Department for Kennedy Krieger Institute, a large rehabilitation hospital affiliated with Johns Hopkins University Medical School. Under her leadership the Neuropsychology Department grew into an internationally recognized clinical service, training and research program.

Lynn, never had any experience in painting. She moved to Willow Valley Retirement Communities in  2014. Among the offerings were art opportunities and eventually she found her way to Linda Luke’s watercolor classes. The pictures you see are the result.

I am so grateful to AWC. Without their Zoom capabilities, I would not have been able to participate, to experience the demos, the salons,  to see and grow. Of course, my deepest gratitude goes to Linda, who has given my life incredible satisfaction.

What Are Our AWC Members Up To?

Kate Tufts Joined the
New England
Watercolor Society

Immediately after arriving in Massachusetts I joined the New England Watercolor Society (NEWS) as an associate member.  Signature Member status requires being accepted into a certain number of juried shows.  I felt like there was no time like the present to test the waters, so I submitted this painting for consideration.  I am thrilled that it was chosen and look forward to meeting member artists from all over New England.

The painting was accepted into the NEWS Spring into Art show which runs from March 8th to May 8th at their gallery at the Plymouth Center for the Arts in Plymouth, MA.

I spotted this woman at a show at the Whitney Museum in New York about a year ago and thought she was fascinating. She was a work of art herself.  Thus the title of the painting, “In the Eye of the Beholder.”

Linda Luke's Art Selected for Magazine Cover

Linda Luke is excited to announce that her piece, "Welcome Home", was featured on the cover of the most recent issue of Attraction magazine.

Here is part of the article.

"Linda Luke is a regular on the arts scene here on the MidShore. She spends many happy hours on the Eastern teaching destination workshops, participating in exhibits at the Academy Art Museum, the Waterfowl Festival, and the  Oxford Community Center as well as helping launch the first annual Plein Air Easton 20 years ago. We are so honored to have her artwork featured in the Winter issue of Attraction magazine with the painting, “Welcome Home".

"Corner of the Garden at Montgeron" by Claude Monet

Plein air painting is a French expression meaning “in the open air,” and refers to the act of painting outdoors. The term was used to describe Claude Monet and the Impressionists in France. Since then, the term plein air has been used to describe people who paint outside. Using a pochade box, or outdoor easel, paints, and brushes, plein air artists strive to capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject before them.

EXHIBITS

EARTH DAY AT ST. LUKE'S CHURCH,  APRIL 26-28

We have been invited to return to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Eastport to exhibit in their second annual Earth Day Festival.  (1101 Bay Ridge Ave, Annapolis 21403, next to the Eastport Shopping Center).  The festival hours on Saturday are 10 am to 3 pm.

The festival will open the evening of Friday, April 26,
with a concert and reception (time TBD).

This is a special event for all of Annapolis so I hope you’ll be able to participate. There are lectures, poetry readings, performances, music and more throughout the three days. Please go to the AWC website https://annapoliswatercolorclub.org  and enter two of your paintings on relevant subjects, everything in our natural world that we all treasure and want to preserve, woods, water, sky, plants, wild animals. If you wish, you might like to include a poem or prose that relates to your painting and we will include that beside your painting. This added a unique, and much appreciated, touch to the exhibit last year. We have space for two paintings per artist. There is a $15 entry fee. There is no commission on sales, but the club will make a donation to the church.

We will have bins for matted work, so there is room for three matted pieces each. These can be original watercolors or giclée reproductions.  The church will have a raffle/silent auction and encourages any donations of artwork to their fundraising efforts.

The deadline for submissions is Monday, April 15.
Paintings will be received at the church before noon on Thursday, April 25.
Pick up will be after the Sunday service on April 28, 12 - 3 pm

Our members are encouraged to paint plein air in the magnificent woodlands behind the church during the festival. There is a restoration stream running through the woods, which at this time of year, is studded with blue phlox, bluebells and redbud trees, all in full bloom. We will have a table for displaying paintings or sketches done at that time. There is no fee for this, so even if you are not exhibiting, come out and paint. To sign up for the plein air painting, please visit our website annapoliswatercolorclub.org

This is always an inspiring and uplifting event, so come and enjoy it.

SUNSHINE CLUB

We all march to a different drummer. Some prefer a slow march, others a much faster pace. But there are times when we are just out of step. It's those times that the Sunshine Club is here for. To help our members get back on their feet with a smile on their face and a swing in their step. Of course we also specialize in helping to celebrate gold medal achievements and service to our profession! Please, if you, or someone you know would benefit from one of our e-cards, please send their name, email and occasion to  sunshine.AWC.dw@gmail.com and we will salute them with a beautiful ecard.

Thank You, Dina Weavers, Chair for Sunshine Club

As most of you know, Sheryl Paris stepped down as our Treasurer, effective January 31, 2024.  She would like to encourage one of our members to consider volunteering for the interesting job.  Sheryl has provided a brief job description.  Please contact Juanita Green, President, if you are interested: Juanitagreen640@yahoo.com  Meanwhile, we have employed Flaherty Solutions to handle our accounting needs and reporting.

As I am stepping down from my Treasurer duties this month, I wanted to thank you for the well-wishes I received at our most recent meeting. It has been an honor to hold this rewarding position for almost 8 years! The best part was getting to know other artists in the Club and working with them to help keep our club interesting and fun. If someone would like to know more about the Treasurer position, here are the basics.

AWC Treasurer - Key responsibilities:

  • Deposits checks and/or cash, keeping accurate records in QuickBooks and Wild Apricot.
  • Writes checks for monthly Demo artists, and others as necessary. (Other regular bills are on auto-debit.)
  • Reconciles the bank account statement with AWC’s QuickBooks monthly and reports to the Board each month.
  • Visits the PO Box on Legion Ave. for mail (weekly).
  • Very easy prep (online) of State & Federal Tax reports once each year.

OPEN POSITIONS FOR
BOARD MEMBERS AND CHAIRS

As noted below, we have the following volunteer positions open.
Please consider serving a two-year term for one of these fun jobs!

TREASURER
EXHIBITS CHAIR
HOSPITALITY CHAIR
PUBLICITY AND PROGRAM CHAIR

Email our President, Juanita Green, for more information
about any of these positions.

Or email the person in the job at the present time.

WEB SITE

Don not be fooled!  By now, most of us have learned to recognize scams, but it’s worth repeating the warning.  I receive many emails that appear to be sent from our president, Juanita Green, or occasionally from another board member.  They may ask for help with paying for some club expense, or they may just ask me to contact them, claiming they need help and are not able to call right now.  There is not always anything obvious to arouse suspicion, and I have almost been taken in more than once.  The sender’s name can be easily changed, so if you get an email that seems to be from someone you know but that looks suspicious, the first thing to do is to check the actual email address of the sender.

Do not respond to the email or click any links.  To be safe, rather than responding to the email, call them, or, if you know their real email address, send a new email and check with them that way.  If the email seems to be from a board member, you can email any board member through the website by going to  ‘board members’ under the ‘members’ item on the menu (https://annapoliswatercolorclub.org/Board-Members).  Our board members have been using their personal email addresses, but will soon be changing to email addresses that use the annapoliswatercolorclub.org domain name, and we hope that will make them easier to recognize as legitimate.
